HW Exhibits completed a three-sided interpretive kiosk for the Town of Hilton Head Island. The kiosk highlights the history of the Hilton Head Fishing Cooperative, a historic African American fishing cooperative that led the charge to protect the estuaries of Hilton Head Island from a BASF chemical plant. The plant was scheduled to be built on nearby Victoria Bluff on Skull Creek, just upstream from the fishing cooperative’s dock and facilities. We designed a custom topper for the kiosk that reflected the shrimp trawlers in the HHFC fleet. Working with Mr. Thomas C. Barnwell, Jr, the last living member of the cooperative, Ms. Edra Stephens, and the Town of Hilton Head, HWE wrote content and designed the site-specific kiosk, now installed at the Rowing and Sailing Center at Squire Pope Community Park.
