Oral History Interviews
In 2018 the City of North Charleston replaced the historic Charleston Amtrak Station with a modern intermodal transportation center. Since the station was eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, Brockington developed a mitigation plan that included documenting of the train station, salvaging of architectural elements, writing a historical marker, and designing a history room about the station and the adjacent traditional African American community of Liberty Hill. HWE hosted two community history days. We invited residents to bring old photographs and memorabilia and recorded short interviews with participants. Portions of the recordings and salvaged materials were incorporated into the exhibits. Our design integrates the story of Liberty Hill and its residents with the story of the historic station by placing it within the larger context of the Great Migration, economic development, the Civil Rights Movement, and equal access to public transportation.
